Devin Townsend and 'writer's block' are two things that have about as much chance as coming together in this lifetime as George Bush hugging a tree.

Perhaps most importantly are the lyrics, which don’t immediately hit the listener. It takes a lot of reflection and devotion, on the part of the listener, to truly digest the lyrics, which tell a story of love, loss and human relationships. This record is intensely passionate, and that’s something that is apparent all the way through as the instrumentation and lyrics from Devin stretch out to the listener. The lyrics are made even more apt along the journey as they tend to describe a lot of the listeners thoughts and feelings throughout the record. The consuming passion, the flame of intense love and skill at switching moods hit the listener like a tonne of bricks in the face. Though the narrative may be simplistic, the complexities of the overall story and how it is told make this one of those records that takes a number of listens, over many years, to fully understand and appreciate the context of the material. So, who do we have behind door number one: the vocals.

I'm not sure why, but it's the kind of music that you can treat as a friend - it's always there for you. Maybe it's obvious that I'm edging around the subject and not saying that this music is anything in particular: that's partly because it's true, 'Accelerated Evolution' doesn't sound like something specific, it sounds like many things, both as a whole and moment by moment. It's everything: heavy and soft, emotional and playful, atmospheric and catchy, serious and tongue-in-cheek.

Having done extreme metal, heavy metal thunder and all that jazz, it might come to something of a shock to some Devin devotees that 'Accelerated Evolution' veers precariously close to pop-punk ever so occasionally. It's not something that dominates the proceedings, and maybe it wasn't meant to be intentional, but album closer 'Slow Me Down' especially is just throwaway fluff and doesn't exactly stretch the talents of the man. Apart from other minimal lapses in focus, 'Accelerated Evolution' rolls along quite nicely. It isn't as ambient and spacey as previous Devin solo outing 'Terria', but the results are equally as stirring. If you had to bash your brains in for a definition, then it would be simple and adequate enough to label this a modern melodic rock album. 'Random Analysis' possesses a knockout, stripped-down melody, while 'Sunday Afternoon' brings SOUNDGARDEN to mind in one of their particularly emotional states.

Songs such as ', ', and ' were compared to Townsend's, but were noted as 'less frantic and more mature.' Townsend wrote the album to be 'commercially viable', making his existing style more concise and accessible but without going so far as to write pop songs.

The album never strays into wanky regions or any sort of territory that modern metal usually does, but this isn't your bog-standard metal record. In fact, it's only a metal record by its guitar tone, occasional harsh vocals, and the production. In the end, this record is one of the greatest products of a human mind, and it so happens to be the work of one of the most eccentric and introverted minds in music, Devin Townsend.

Don't sit down expecting riffs, don't sit down expecting singalongs, don't sit down expecting atmosphere - just sit down and let it happen. And in the end - after you listen to it enough - you will find riffs, singalongs, and atmosphere, and you will love music even more and your life will be richer, even if you still don't have any money. I wouldn't play this album to help me do work or to accompany any activity that requires a lot of attention, because this is music that can absorb a lot of attention; yet I would happily listen to it while doing any number of other tasks or just by itself. Sometimes, it gives me a great focus, sometimes it lets my mind wander, sometimes it forces me to scrutinize my emotions, sometimes it allows me to release them.

Devin Townsend and 'writer's block' are two things that have about as much chance as coming together in this lifetime as George Bush hugging a tree. In his world, if he's not working on or releasing an album, then he probably pops a thermometer in his mouth to check if he's coming down with something. Consequently, in some quarters it's has become easy to label the grimacing Canuck a crackpot, unable to do much else except churn out music as a mere statement of his shifting personality. At the end of the day, though, you cannot argue with the consistent quality of his output. For every so-so ZIMMER'S HOLE album (arguably the weakest of his projects), there is at least a raucous, riff-slinging one from his main squeeze STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, and to offset that, a more introspective work under his own name — which brings us neatly around to 'Accelerated Evolution'.

The guitar work here is what really stands out, as there is not as much bass and layers as on the other songs. It's one of the lighter songs on the cd, but it's also one of the most capturing.and even.charming? Fans of music in general would be well advised to pick this up, as it is one of the most original and smart releases in a long time. I've as of late become a huge Devin Townsend fan and have gone to some trouble getting his stuff both SYL and otherwise. I am impressed by the sheer breadth and diversity of his solo output, and while I'm not a huge fan of all of it, I give him high marks for trying new things and always being true to where he is emotionally at the time any of his releases come out.

Devy’s vocals start out quiet and have an effect on them, but it really helps the mood of the song. The song then gets some more emotional vocal work from Devin that is beyond great sounding, there are also a few more growls used on this song which help the mood. This song also features a kick ass solo that goes along with the music fantastically followed by more amazing vocals from Devin. I would definitely consider this a standout track on the album along with Deadhead. “Traveller” comes next and this is a fantastically upbeat song which is nothing but fun to listen to. If you were in a bad mood, this song could put you in a good mood, it is just that upbeat. The drums at the beginning are really done and they carry on through the song superbly.

I hired Mike and Dave Young, who were in their early 20s at a music store I frequented. I then auditioned a few drummers until I came across Ryan Van Poederooyen, who was in a local band that people were very complimentary of in terms of the drums. My old friend Brian Waddell had come back into my life, and it seemed like a way for me to work with people and 'teach' them what I had 'learned' in my experiences touring and being in bands. As such, the name 'Accelerated Evolution' seemed appropriate. This record was written after a trip to Korea had led me to complications of the heart, and a need to make direct music about relationships and the problems I had with them. It was mixed by Shaun as well, (although I was much more involved with it than SYL).

A track with some relatively lighter moments, but still always keeps up that amazing level of layer and depth. Some very emotional cries from Mr Townsend. Random Analysis - This is where the genius shines through for the first time, on the first listen through. Depth Charge is really just as smart, but you are too busy adjusting to Devy's craAaAazy way of thinking to understand most of it.

The album was released on clear double vinyl by Back on Black, a division of Plastichead, in 2010. Each side contains two songs save the fourth, which has the last three.

Townsend utilized much more than in his previous albums, and produced and mixed the album in his trademark ' style, blending 'layers upon layers of guitars, keyboards, and vocals'. Release [ ] Accelerated Evolution was released in March 2003 on Townsend's independent label, HevyDevy Records.

“Away” is an ethereal piece of metal where we hear DT’s singular guitar work simply sing. No where else does tapping sound like the music of heaven except in Devy’s hands. “Slow Me Down” is a nice piece of metal-pop that brings the album to a nice close. I concede that Devy doesn’t create any new sounds on ACCELERATED EVOLUTION. We’ve heard the building blocks of his music before, there aren’t any huge surprises.

In fact, the keyboards and bass, though underlying throughout, are perhaps more significant than the guitars in terms of portraying a mature and dynamic sound. The guitars have a raw quality to them, given how distorted and hurt by past experiences they sound (shown typically on ‘Deadhead’). The record however, is typified by Devin’s brilliant performance throughout. From the sorrowful ‘Deadhead’ to the jovial ‘Traveller’ which contains some instantly catchy drums, this record serves only to reward the listener with some of the best, and perhaps more mainstream, progressive metal.

He found it 'refreshing' to play with people who appreciated his solo material more than Strapping Young Lad's. Notable was the absence of drummer of Strapping Young Lad, who had played on Townsend's previous three solo albums. Townsend wrote and produced the band's first album at the same time he was working on SYL, spending half the week on one and half on the other. The album was and by Townsend and Shaun Thingvold, who has worked on many of Townsend's and Strapping Young Lad's albums. It had the working title Relationships, but was renamed Accelerated Evolution, a nod to the frantic pace of putting a new band together in under a year. Music [ ] Accelerated Evolution was written as 'the polar opposite' of SYL.
